Employment concept

Employment can be understood as the occupation or trade, which a person performs in a work unit, which confers on him the quality of an employee, or from the point of view of the employer, such as one who occupies someone in a job position, generating employment, as a synonym of work.

In a more general sense to use something is to use it, be it tools, animals or people, in pursuit of an objective, for example, use cows to plow the field, or use wheels to move vehicles. In the case of human employment, it is also about the use of human effort, by itself, or another person, which, since the abolition of slavery in the 19th century, should have been used in exchange for a salary.

The situation of societies with respect to employment, that is, if people of productive age, get or not work, after undertaking their search, is one of the indexes that measure their development. The most evolved countries tend to full employment, that is, that labor supply and demand correspond. In underdeveloped countries abounds unemployment , labor offered, but do not get to work, or underemployed , where skilled people must settle for lower performing work hierarchy or working fewer hours than they need or want. In these states the existence is very common of jobs in black, or illegal, where workers do not enjoy the benefits of labor laws, such as social work, Christmas bonus, paid vacations, and so on.

Not all those who employ their labor force do so for others. There are people who do it for their own benefit, calling themselves this form of self-employment, where the use of their own labor force, provides them with profits, or sometimes losses, since this activity of self-employed workers brings with them the idea of ​​risk. Employees, who put their work force to be used by another or others, have no risk, because they receive a return for their services, although except in jobs of hierarchy, employees cannot aspire to large salaries. And in addition, private employment may be terminated by the employer’s decision, which, if it does so without justification, must compensate the employee with compensation.
